Juugomangoku Ramen (南国飯店 十五万石) is a budget chain in Oita known for its variety of dishes, including ramen, rice bowls, katsu-don, fried rice, gyoza, and curry. The restaurant is famous for its generous portions and delicious ramen, making it a favorite among both locals and visitors. The Kamegawa outlet, run by an elderly couple, has a cozy, personal feel that makes it seem like you’re enjoying a home-cooked meal. Despite being a chain, each location retains a charming, old-school interior that adds to its appeal.

Tonkotsu Ramen: 70/100
Noodle: 25/35
The noodles are medium thick, firm, with a clean and snappy bite. They have a nice earthy wheat taste.
Soup: 25/35
The soup looks cloudy but remains watery. It’s milky, savory with a sweet undertone and a mellow garlic and peppery aroma. We noticed some pepper salt sprinkled on top, which likely contributes to the flavor.
Meat: 15/20
The chashu is a thin slice of pork, mostly lean meat that’s firm yet crumbles easily. The fatty part melts in your mouth, though there’s not much fat. The marination is well-balanced, salty-sweet, and retains some of the porky goodness.
Topping: 5/10
Other toppings are classic: green onion, bean sprouts, and some white sesame. Overall, the meal is simple, akin to a milkier version of classic Hakata-style Tonkotsu.
