Gyoza no ohsho

Gyoza no Ohsho | Singapore | 40/100

WHAT WE ATE

  • Kyushu Tonkotsu Ramen, 40/100 (10 Sep 2022)

Hidden in the corner of Cuppage is Gyoza no Ohsho selling Japanese Chinese cuisines. Apart from the Gyoza which they are known for, they also sell quite a wide range of ramen. At the time of writing, it seems that they have increased prices. Those older google reviews about it being an affordable and value for money in the area is up for debate now.

KYUSHU TONKOTSU RAMEN 40/100 points

Noodle – 5/35

Not a fan of their noodles. Its’ soft, mushy and springy texture reminds me of instant noodles. The noodles lack bite and any distinct flavour.

Broth – 15/35

The broth has a nice hint of pork flavour and is savoury enough, but it lacks the richness we were expecting. There was no emulsified fats, creaminess or whatsoever. Its texture and consistency is also rather thin. But having said that, it’s not tasting bad – just far from what we will associate with the classic richness of Tonkotsu.

Meat – 15/20

The Chashu is not bad. A medium thick cut thats tender and fills each bite with flavours from the marination. The saltiness is also just right.

Tamago – 5/10

The Tamago was a little salty and the texture feels overcooked – the yolk was almost all cooked. The other toppings includes beansprouts, spring onions and bok choy (aka Chinese Cabbage or Qing Gen Cai). While the beansprouts and spring onion weren’t any good, the Bok Choy was not bad – the subtle bitterness from it was quite nice.

CONCLUSION

Even if we disregard the rather high price point, the quality just doesn’t hit the mark for us. But if you are here for Gyoza, it’s pretty good.
